A raw and candid ride through the San Francisco drag club Trannyshack.

Plot Outline

In this fast-moving portrait of "Trannyshack," a San Francisco institution, documentarian Sean Mullens has lots of fun telling his story. Mullens shot 350 hours of film over four years to create his tribute to the legendary weekly cabaret. Begun in 1996, Heklinka, an Icelandic drag queen, started "Trannyshack" as a place for queer punk dragsters (like herself) to perform. These punker/performance artist drag queens and kings gather for a party each Tuesday night at midnight and bare their souls. Interviews with performers Suppositori Spelling, Heklinka, Rusty Hips, Glamamore and The Steve Lady give us a glimpse into a dark and creative world seldom seen. Portraits of these artists are punctuated by deliciously raw lip-synch performances of songs by Bauhaus, David Bowie, Patti Smith and Joan Jett. This is the story of a group of performers who gather each week on a six-foot-wide stage and spill lots of sweat and stage blood in the name of entertainment. There’s not a slow moment in this documentary about a unique band of “gender delusionists."
